Runaway Slaves
- Owners would actually kill slaves if they caught them running away.
- Harriet Tubman (see side image) was considered very brave for sneaking slaves to Canada.
- Sometimes slaves would run away and live in the woods but would often get found and be chained and/or whipped
- In one situation there was a man named Mr. Rankins who had a lighthouse which slaves traveled to in hope of freedom
- William and Ellen Kraft were a married African American couple who dressed up to escape slavery. Ellen easily disguised herself as an owner to her husband (looking like a slave) and walked through the streets with no suspicions.
This is a song called Follow the Drinking Gourd that slaves would sing as they found their way to freedom. The lyrics were secretly instructions for the slaves on how to get to freedom.
