Domestic Work
- House servants were trained from childhood.
- Other slaves envied the house servant and the house servant was lead to believe that he/she had the greatest honor that could come.
- Senior housemaids would wear key rings that held many different keys. They would walk in a way for everyone to hear the keys clattering. The key ring was a "badge" of honor to show others how trusted of a maid they were.
- While ladies would sleep, slaves would have to fan them to keep them cool and to shoo the flies away. The slaves couldn't stomp the flies for the case of possibly waking the mistress up.
- The house servants slept in the kitchen quarters. Slaves would also eat and did the unpleasant work of the kitchen in these rooms.
- Women were rushed to finish their work before night fall.
